Pregnant woman, unborn child die in domestic violence attack, Tampa police say

TAMPA — A woman who was six months pregnant was attacked and fatally injured early Saturday in a domestic violence incident that also led to the death of her unborn child, according to Tampa police.

The woman was attacked in the 2200 block of E Emma St., police said. Officers were sent there about 3:30 a.m. and found her with life-threatening injuries.

She was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where police said she died from her injuries. Tampa police did not release her name or any other details about the incident.

Hospital staff delivered the baby, who police said died soon after.

An investigation determined that Jay Leonard Rodriguez, 39, attacked the woman in her home and caused the death of her and her unborn child, according to Tampa police.

He was arrested at his home on two counts of second-degree murder and also faces a charge of violating his probation on past charges of armed robbery and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
